Shaped by
the sea

How do we capture a town and a people shaped by the sea? A place of shipwrecks and stories, myths and makers. Poole Museum wanted a brand that could bring all of that to life, reflecting its ever-changing character, vibrant community and the sea’s enduring pull.

The Challenge

Bringing Poole Museum to life in a modern and impactful way, creating a brand experience that felt unique and unmistakably “Poole.”

The identity needed to reflect a town and community shaped by the sea: dynamic, layered, and full of character. But Poole isn’t just about heritage, it’s a place where creativity meets industry, where the expected gives way to the unexpected.

Our challenge was to capture that fusion of influences. The maritime, the cultural, and the contemporary, translating it into a visual and verbal language that could anchor the museum’s next chapter.

The Solution

We built a brand that reflects the town’s rich mix of people, industry and influence. It’s full of character and a touch of the unexpected.

Our colours take their cues from Poole, industry, and the coastline, with names drawn from the water and the working harbour town. Weathered circle motifs echo the marks left by time and tide. The typography system utilises an array of weights and varied type widths in stacked layouts mirroring the craftsmanship and blend of cultures that define the place.

Together, all these elements create a brand that feels fresh, layered and full of life, designed to spark that instant Ooooo moment of curiosity and connection that Poole inspires.

Strategic creative direction from Loveable

The Result

The brand has been praised by key stakeholders throughout Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch council, and we’re proud to have played a role in the launch of such a fantastic venue. It’s early days, but after a huge investment the museum has opened to a wave of public interest and media attention, with over 5000 visitors in it’s first week.

We love our colours, our new personality, it is US! Zap worked seamlessly as part of our large internal team, they were responsive, skillful, creative, and could translate what was in our brains onto the page! A critical part of our Museum Maker team.
