We helped Wiltshire Creative craft a bold, modern identity for their open-air reinterpretation of Romeo & Juliet.

The Challenge

We were tasked by Wiltshire Creative to create a modern identity for their open-air reinterpretation of Romeo & Juliet, which would be the centrepiece of their annual Salisbury International Arts Festival.

Our challenge was to work with their Young Company Cast to truly understand how the story resonated with young people growing up in Salisbury today – ultimately creating something fresh and modern, yet still unmistakably Romeo & Juliet.

The Solution

Through strategy sessions with the Young Company Cast, we translated their insights into the identity of the show, referencing both the brutalism of the theatre’s architecture and the violence, tenderness and passion at the heart of the story.

Next came crafting the main show artwork. Using everything from hand-drawn media to the ethical use of AI, we depicted Romeo & Juliet’s struggle set in modern-day Salisbury, weaving in assets from the play and visual metaphors for its key themes – rewarding theatre fans for looking deeper, while remaining inclusive to those newer to the theatre.

The Result

The result was a show identity that felt fresh, visceral and edgy. It was warmly received by the Young Company Cast, those at Wiltshire Creative, and the public — who flocked to see this wonderfully modern and unique interpretation of a timeless classic.

Zap led three brilliant workshops with our Young Ambassadors to find out what would make our new production of Romeo and Juliet stand out to young people. Responding to ideas from the group and Artistic Director, they created artwork that perfectly captures the immersive nature of the performance and the filmic look the Young Ambassadors were immediately drawn to. The process was fun, engaging, and full of laughter and we are delighted with the results.
